If you are looking to set-up an online business using a shopping cart or if you already have one but aren’t getting the results you’ve expected here are some great front-end and back-end tips from IT Business that you should implement in your online store:

Front-end
1. Use search engine optimization and other marketing methods to ensure that your site is seen and used by many.

2. Make your product catalogue accessible. Have products on your main page or something to guide your customers to your catalogue within one click.

3. Make sure your site looks professional.

4. Keep it clutter free!

Back-end
1. Browser compatibility is important. Make sure your site works properly on Windows and Mac.

2. Keep up your site’s responsiveness. Don’t put excessive amounts of images and graphics because it will take too long to load.

3. Simplify checkouts. If you make it too complicated visitors will get frustrated and leave.

4. Make your product detail pages bookmarkable. Try not to have your product pages embedded in frames or else visitors won’t be able to bookmark a page for future reference.

5. Be sure it’s secure. Make sure that your visitor’s credit card information doesn’t show up in the address bar on the thank you page or they will most likely never come back. Check that your form page has “https://” (means you are on a secure page) and not just “http://” in the address bar.

If you have downloaded a previous free version of Opera you probably remember the advertisement banner, well if you download the latest version of the browser, 8.5 and still a free download, you will no longer see them. Jon von Tetzchner, CEO of Opera Software says “Removing the ad banner and licensing fee will encourage many new users to discover the speed, security and unmatched usability of the Opera browser.”

It is believed it will take over a year before Opera catches up to its competitor Firefox. In the meantime Microsoft is also moving in Opera and Firefox’s foot steps by offering tabbed browsing, improved security, and RSS capabilities in the upcoming IE 7.0 browser.

There hasn’t been much discussion about it yet but you can download a new beta product called “Google Secure Access” for free, it is “a downloadable client application that allows users to establish a more secure WiFi connection.” *

“Becoming [an internet] service provider would be quite a stretch for Google, but considering the billions of dollars Google could throw at the problem it could become a reality,” Ovum analyst Roger Entner wrote after the recent rumors, discussing the company’s expansion beyond its core search service. It is the first major search engine to offer complete blog and feed capabilities. You can search in English, Brazilian Portuguese, Dutch, French, German, Italian, Korean, Russian and Spanish.

“Google defines blogs as sites that use RSS and other feeds, and update content on a regular basis. However, Google Blog Search is not a full-text search, because some publishers syndicate only excerpts of their content via RSS - and Google will not crawl content that’s disallowed by a publisher.” reports MarketingVox.com

When was the last time you re-designed your Website?

If you had your website done back in the day when flashing images were everywhere and there would be at least four different text colors used on one page then it’s probably time to get it re-designed. First impressions mean a lot on the web, if there is too much going on and visitors can’t find what they are looking for quickly they are most likely to move on which means you may have just lost a potential customer. Most major companies have very clean and simple sites that are easy to navigate through. A few examples would be Telus, Adobe, and Webnames. Having your site redone will peak your recent and lost visitors curiosity and they will be more willing to navigate your site again.

If a total re-design isn’t in your budget you could perform a clean-up by removing any excess images/advertisements, simplify the colors (sticking to a maximum of three colors is usually best), fix any broken links, make sure all contact forms work, and update all outdated content. This will bring life back to your web site and will most likely increase your business.
