Holiday shopping started off slow for eBay but has increased dramatically over the past weeks.

“Goldman Sachs analyst Anthony Noto reported in a research note Tuesday that listings increased by almost 50 million last week to 441 million, which is 35% more than the total at the close of the same week a year ago.

He credited aggressive promotions in The Netherlands, Germany, Belgium, Canada and the U.K. for a 19.3% increase in international listings, which helped to offset a 5.5% domestic decline a week after heavy promotional programs in the U.S. EBay’s domestic listings are still up 30% for the fourth quarter over 2004, part of a 25% worldwide increase.”

Great news for all those selling their products online!

An alternative to regifting gifts gone wrong

It happens every holiday season. Millions of people receive unwanted gifts — whether the wrong size, the wrong style, or just plain wrong. According to a new survey commissioned by eBay, 64 percent admit to “regifting,” or secretly giving unwanted gifts to others. For those who prefer to avoid getting caught regifting, there is an alternative: selling unwanted gifts online. In fact, 20 percent of survey respondents indicated they have sold unwanted gifts over the Internet.

The online reselling trend represents a new twist on regifting that allows people to turn tepid gifts into cold cash — enabling them to get what they really wanted for the holidays or to pay down holiday credit card bills.

“Practically everyone gets gifts they just don’t want — and it’s better to turn them into something useful than to throw them in a closet,” says eBay’s Jim “Griff” Griffith. “By selling unwanted gifts online people can avoid the potential regifting embarrassment, and best of all, buyers can find some amazing deals from sellers who paid nothing for their gifts.”

eBay launches ‘want ads’ online

eBay now gives shoppers the ability to advertise what sorts of items they would like to see up for sale on its website, thanks to a new service called “Want It Now“. With Want It Now, eBay buyers can now tell sellers exactly what they are looking for when they are unable to find it on the site and sellers can then browse through these requests to discover buyers for their items, as well as get new ideas for what items are in demand.

Christopher Saunders of E-Commerce-Guide.com reports that this new service will be an excellent tool for potential sellers to do a little market research on future products to list:

For their part, sellers can browse the Want It Now listings to find likely buyers for items that they might have not yet listed — or, in some cases, products that they might have been reluctant to list out of concerns that a market didn’t exist for them. In this way, Want It Now serves as a tool to facilitate buyer-seller interaction and boost the marketplace, while also providing an important customer research function.
